Elen

About the village

The small village of Elen has a long history. The village is first mentioned in the year 1150 as ‘Hellim’ (<‘hal/hale, hael’ ->‘hard dry ground’ ). But it was inhabited for much longer. Sipernau castle, for instance, appears in sources as early as the 8th century, as a farmstead. There is talk of a castle itself from the second half of the 14th century. Elen, like nearby Heppeneert (Maaseik) are distinctly agricultural villages, with historic Maaseik farms and an agrarian landscape.

Historic gravel extraction created several large ponds, such as Meerheuvel (not accessible, drinking water reserve) and Bichterweerd (nature reserve managed by Natuurpunt), which is a top area for water birds. Smaller is ‘de Broeken’, a nature reserve west of Elen. Finally, to the east, the large-scale gravel extraction project Elerweerd is currently being implemented.

Available activities

Hiking

The area around Elen is ideal for exploring by foot. You walk mainly in a rural setting, along the Meuse and nature reserves you can have a nice stroll, and in the village centre the past comes back to life. For those who like to be guided on their way, some tips:

  • Discover the hiking area of Elen, including mill “De Hoop”, nature reserves Bichterweerd, Meerheuvel and De Broeken. Also take a walk to Sipernau Castle.
  • Set off under the guidance of a MaasVerkenner (Meuse explorer).

Cycling

Thanks to the extensive cycle route network in Belgium and the Netherlands, you can put together your own cycle route using junctions marked in both directions. So you decide which direction you go and how long your ride is. During your cycling trip, take a ferry to the other bank of the Meuse (via junction 49). This makes cross-border cycling in the RivierPark Maasvallei very easy.

Via junction 26 in Heppeneert or junction 49 in Dilsen, you enter the cycle route network. You can park on the church square in Elen. You can map out your cycling route using the cross-border thematic cycling map RivierPark Maasvallei.
