Heritage
The landscape of the Meuse Valley has been shaped by the river over centuries, with human settlements developing in relation to the unpredictable Meuse River. This area is characterised by unique relics, such as old river arms and compact Meuse villages.
Did you know that “half villages”—where the church is positioned not in the centre but against the dike—as well as “semi-circular” roads or streams that follow the path of old meanders, are typical features of the Meuse Valley?
In the 20th and 21st centuries, this ancient landscape underwent significant changes, including large-scale gravel extraction (which created lakes!), mining, population growth, agricultural expansion and urbanisation. These developments are evident throughout the landscape. Additionally, commercial shipping disappeared; nearby canals were constructed because they were much more stable for increasingly larger vessels. While you can still see quays, ferry steps and boat monuments that testify to the river’s navigation history, recreational boating is now limited to the stretch from Maaseik onward, with the route from Maastricht to Maaseik remaining largely untraversed.
Many elements of Maasland heritage are now protected, including the historic centres of Thorn, Stevensweert, Maaseik and Oud-Rekem. This heritage is further enriched by mills, bunkers and as many as 19 castle domains. Excavations and findings from gravel extraction reveal the rich heritage narrative hidden in the soil archive. You can find artefacts and relics from the Meuse Valley in various collections
