Recognition as a Landscape Park
On Friday, October 13, 2023, the Flemish Government made its decision regarding the candidate landscape parks. RivierPark Maasvallei is one of the five recognised landscape parks
This recognition is a major boost for all partner organisations, the provinces, the Maasland municipalities, the Regional Landscape Kempen and Maasland (RLKM) and all residents of the Meuse Valley. It represents both a structural and landscape-wide endorsement. Moreover, it provides a stable financial foundation for future regional development, which is essential given the many challenges and opportunities presented by the river landscape of the Meuse.
For more detailed information, you can read the press release following the announcement of the recognition.
Master Plan and Operational Plan
On May 31, 2023, RLKM officially submitted a candidacy on behalf of the partnership in the Meuse Valley. The dossier included a Landscape Biography, a Master Plan and an Operational Plan. You can already view the Landscape Biography and Master Plan here. The Operational Plan is not published but is available upon request.
The Landscape Biography of the RivierPark Maasvallei was prepared by bureau Stroming and RLKM, with input from various historical experts. It explores the impressive creation story of the Meuse and the Limburg Meuse Valley.
The Master Plan for the Meuse Valley River Park outlines the partners’ vision for the area and sets long-term goals over the next 24 years. The Meuse is the central theme throughout the Master Plan. The plan was developed through collaboration with associations, municipal and provincial authorities, as well as nature, agriculture, and tourism organisations and other key stakeholders on both sides of the Meuse.
FAQ
What are Landscape Parks?
Landscape parks are cohesive areas where the centuries-long interaction between natural elements and inhabitants has shaped a unique landscape. These areas are often beloved destinations where people come to enjoy regional products, nature or cultural heritage. Unlike national parks, landscape parks are not large natural reserves but more of a patchwork of spaces where different functions—such as living, agriculture, nature, tourism and heritage—are harmoniously developed.
Isn’t the RivierPark Maasvallei such a cohesive area?
Yes, the Meuse Valley River Park is indeed a cohesive area shaped by the Meuse, where people and the river have long coexisted, further moulding the landscape. Since 2006, there has been cross-border and regional cooperation. However, until now, Flanders did not have an official category for Landscape Parks, unlike many other European countries—think of the famous wine regions in France. To change this, a number of candidate areas have been selected, including the Meuse Valley. In 2022 and 2023, a ‘Master Plan’ or long-term vision was developed, along with a concrete plan for the next five years. The actions continue to focus on nature, heritage, agriculture and tourism—on both sides of the Meuse—while respecting the capacity of the landscape.
What does this mean for residents?
The recognition will not bring additional regulations but will enable even greater collaboration within the existing framework to enhance the quality and experience of the area. A 2021 survey revealed that residents of Maasland are extremely proud of their landscape and deeply care for the river and its banks. There is also strong support for tourism. To ensure continued investment in the Meuse Valley, RLKM, in cooperation with municipalities, the province, and many other partners, pursued this recognition, with close collaboration with the Dutch side of the river.

“This recognition application as a Landscape Park is subsidised as part of the call for Landscape Parks, commissioned by the Flemish Government. The Flemish Parks consist of four National Parks and five Landscape Parks. Each park has a unique character, rich with nature, landscape and heritage. Here, you’ll find lively forests and sand plains reminiscent of deserts. There are places where nature, agriculture, culture, and history intertwine.
