Accessibility for people with disabilities

The RivierPark Maasvallei offers a wide range of activities for individuals with physical disabilities, allowing everyone to enjoy the beauty of the area.

Routes

  • Stokkem hiking area: The green walking loop (2,5 km) takes you along a paved path through the Negenoord nature reserve. Highlights: large grazing animals, gravel pits, flower-lined Meuse dike, clay lookout tower.
  • Aldeneik hiking area: Both the green (3.2 km) and orange (7.6 km) walking loops are wheelchair-friendly. Highlights: gravel pit at Heerenlaak, historic centre of Aldeneik, Maas dike, Ophoven.
  • Heritage walks via the FARO Heritage App: The heritage walks through various Meuse villages mostly follow paved roads. If you encounter an obstacle, you can easily take an alternate path. These walks are not pre-determined loops, so you can explore at your leisure.

  • Cultural route in Stein: This accessible cross-border walking loop (8.7 km) leads you through the Meuse villages of Urmond, Berg aan de Maas and Meeswijk (BE). Highlights: Terp church, ferry, Standerdmolen (post mill). Full route details are available on the Visit Zuid – Limburg website.

  • Molenplas Stevensweert: A section of the path around the Molenplas has been specially adapted for wheelchair users and strollers. However, please note there is a small incline along the route.
 

Places to visit

 
  • Visitor Center De Wissen: The main gateway to the Meuse Valley River Park. Here you’ll find all the tourist information about the region, along with an exhibition space featuring a permanent information centre about the Meuse and rotating exhibits. The exhibition is located on the first floor and is accessible via an elevator.
  • Brasserie De Wissen: Located near the Visitor Center, the brasserie is easily accessible and has an adapted restroom.

  • Visit Maasmechelen: Provides tourist information, regional products and an interactive exhibition about the area’s mining history. The reception desk is lowered for accessibility and the restroom is designed for easy access.

  • Museums in Maaseik: The information desk, Pharmacy Museum, and Regional Archaeological Museum are accessible. There is a wheelchair lift at the entrance, and while the restroom is adapted, it is a bit narrow. Assistance and guide dogs are welcome.
