Aldeneik hiking area
The Aldeneik hiking area is rich in cultural history and filled with fascinating historical sites, many of which can be traced back to the saints Harlindis and Relindis.
Hiking
Six different trails lead you through the area’s beautiful scenery. The green loop (2.8 km) takes you along the gravel lake at Heerenlaak and through the historic village centre of Aldeneik. The orange loop (7.4 km) follows the Meuse dike to Ophoven, where you can connect to the hiking areas of Kessenich and Drie Eigen. For a shorter option, the blue loop (3.2 km) explores the Heerenlaak recreational area, passing a campground and a small day beach.
Good to know: Both the green and orange loops are wheelchair accessible!
With convenient path connectors, you can easily combine various loops in the area to create your ideal hiking route. Detailed routes and trail information can be found on the ‘Aldeneik hiking map’.
Nature along your way
Around Heerenlaak lake, you can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the water. After gravel extraction was completed in 2002, the area was transformed into a park-like landscape with paved trails. On the peninsula, two campsites and a marina with a sandy beach were developed. In the southern part, much of the lake was filled in and repurposed for agriculture.
Within the Aldeneik hiking area, you can also walk along the Labaerdijk in Maaseik, where there are beautiful views of the Meuse, or relax in the quiet floodplain meadows of the pilgrimage village Heppeneert. These centuries-old meadows are among the best-preserved along the Meuse, with their original topography and field layout still intact.
For a wilder experience, be sure to visit De Rug nature reserve just across the border in Roosteren (NL). This beautiful reserve lies slightly outside Aldeneik’s main walking area but is part of RivierPark Maasvallei. Though there are no marked trails, you can wander through the wild river landscape for hours or use the junction node (Knopenlopen) system from our Dutch partners to plan your own route.
