Leut hiking area

The Meuse River has left its mark on this walking area, and that is evident in every corner: the unique street layout of the Meuse village of Mazenhoven, the Maaskruis in Vucht, old river meanders and new wild nature along the Meuse. The combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes this walking area a true gem to explore on foot.

Hiking

The Leut walking area offers five scenic loops, each with unique attractions. The green loop (3 km) guides you through the historic village centre of Leut, past the impressive castle, and through the surrounding landscape park, known for its remarkable tree collection.

For those wanting to explore the riverbanks, the orange (10 km) or red (14.1 km) loops are perfect choices. The orange loop takes you through the expansive Mazenhoven and Maesbempder Greend nature reserves. The red loop highlights ’t Greven in Eisden and its tree-top walkway. This area, shaped by former mining activity, has natural groundwater springs, with some water collected to provide drinking water to families in Limburg. The tree-top walkway tells the unique story of ’t Greven.

Finally, the yellow loop (7 km) brings you to the Maaskruis in Vucht and showcases the unique Maaswinkel nature reserve, which is managed by the Natuurpunt organisation.

With convenient trail connectors, you can easily combine loops to create your ideal hiking route. Detailed maps and route information are available on the ‘Leut hiking map‘.

Nature along your way

The river Meuse and the adjacent Maesbempdergreend-Mazenhoven nature area form the backbone of the Leut walking area, while Vilain XIIII Castle and its extensive landscape park form its heart. This park, with its majestic tree-lined avenues and ancient, towering trees, transports visitors back to the area’s chivalric past. The landscape also features a rich variety of characteristic elements, including hedgerows, old dikes and orchards.

Maesbempdergreend – Mazenhoven

Gravel extraction in the Maesbempdergreend-Mazenhoven nature area created a large pond (Maesbempdergreend). In 2010, the Vlaamse Waterweg agency constructed a side channel near Mazenhoven, allowing Meuse water to flow into the pond during high water levels. The floodplain and Mazenhoven area are home to many wildflowers, such as small teasel, meadow rue, and wild marjoram. Though the landscape may appear rugged, it has high ecological value.

Natuurpunt utilises large grazers like Galloway cattle and Konik horses to maintain the habitat’s diverse structure.

Limburgs Landschap vzw manages Mazenhoven, while Natuurpunt oversees Maesbempdergreend. The cattle and horses are provided by Limburgs Landschap and roam freely in both areas. Visitors are welcome to explore but should maintain a respectful distance from the animals, who appreciate their peace and quiet.

Maaswinkel

Farther south in the Leut walking area, you’ll find Maaswinkel, another unique nature reserve. This small-scale landscape evolved from a former brick factory where clay pits were dug for brick production. Now, these pits provide ideal habitats for a variety of amphibians. Natuurpunt works to carefully manage these ponds, even adding new ones, and maintains a high-stem orchard here as well.
