Obbicht and Grevenbicht

About the villages

Obbicht and Grevenbicht are two charming riverside villages along the Meuse, now part of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen. Near Obbicht lies the Nattenhoven nature reserve, a free-roaming area where large grazers roam, managed by Natuurmonumenten. This area was once a worksite for the Grensmaas Project, where the riverbanks were lowered to give the Meuse more room, creating new natural habitats. Grevenbicht also offers accessible areas like Elba, already open for exploration, and Koeweide-Trierveld, still in development by the Consortium Grensmaas.

A historic shift of the Meuse River in the 17th century caused part of old Obbicht to be swallowed by the river. Obbicht Castle and other notable buildings date back to later centuries, and like the nearby town of Leut, Obbicht’s castle park has a unique collection of trees! Grevenbicht also has a rich history, with Roman-era artefacts found in the area, and eventually expanded to include the smaller hamlets of Papenhoven and Schipperskerk. The Kingbeek stream flows through Grevenbicht and empties into the Meuse just north of the village.

Available activities

Hiking

Explore the free-roaming areas of Nattenhoven and Elba on foot, where you can leave the paths and find your way to the Meuse River’s edge. Be sure to keep around 25 metres away from the large grazing animals that roam here in herds. For a guided experience, join a local MaasVerkenner

Cycling

The extensive cycling network connecting Belgium and the Netherlands allows you to plan your own route by following clearly marked junctions in both directions. Set your own route length and direction, and take a ferry across the Meuse to explore the opposite shore —making cross-border cycling through the RivierPark Maasvallei as easy as ever.

You can access the cycling network through junction 19 in Grevenbicht at ‘t Veerke or junction 27 in Berg-aan-de-Maas at the car ferry. Parking is available at the large lot at Burgemeester Kotenplein in Grevenbicht. Use the cross-border RivierPark Maasvallei cycling map to help plan your route.
